“The Soul of the Bike”

For Tony Ellsworth, true innovative design means not taking shortcuts. It’s not about hanging components on a frame. From top to bottom, he designs his bikes to “have a soul” - the perfect combination of technology and style that creates a great experience.

Tony Ellsworth was born in Eugene, Oregon, where he spent his early days exploring the meandering pathways and trails around the city. Nature and motion continue to influence Tony as he pursues the same purity and efficiency within the products he designs today, for his own brands and other known brands all around the world.

In 1991, Tony’s love for cycling combined with his natural, mechanical aptitude, and the first Ellsworth bicycle frame rolled out of his suburban garage. With a move to California, Tony began to see his bike business grow with frames being shipped by the hundreds. By the mid 1990s, Ellsworth Bikes were featured in some of the biggest magazines in the world, garnering critical acclaim for their supreme craftsmanship and technological advancements. The design process and carefully bringing his line of bikes into reality brought Tony incredible joy. Throughout this period Tony learned that he could share this happiness with others through his craft.

Tony’s passion for design is rooted in his desire to create products that can improve the world and his focus is to have his products bring happiness to those who use them. His products have been featured multiple times in Wired, Popular Science, Men’s Journal, and many other magazines and websites over the years. His building designs have been praised for their practicality and their commitment to sustainability.

As Tony’s success as a bicycle designer grew, so did his desire to branch out and bring his design expertise to other industries. Tony designed the new headquarters for Ellsworth Bikes to fully offset its energy consumption, contributing to the sustainable wave that would soon sweep the industry. Tony followed his HQ by designing sustainable architectural projects like the ‘Big House, ‘Wind Turbine’, among others in San Diego, California.

Tony describes his ability to see a project through all major steps in its development as the ‘Infinite Process’. This involves being close to his materials, as he is always looking to challenge the measures of usability and sustainability in his designs. By working intimately with design and creation, Tony can see a project through from initial idea to final manufacturing, giving him quality control throughout the entire process.

In 2017, Tony began design and development on what would become the Radiant Carbon, an innovative Class 1 electric bike that Forbes Magazine dubbed “an ebike unlike anything else on the market” in its review of the product. In 2020, he launched The Ride Bikes, a new brand that would house the Radiant Carbon as well as future models he currently has in design and development.
